A summer holiday might seem like a costly expense, but by booking last minute you can save hundreds of pounds and explore some beautiful places around the world. What’s more, there’s something very exciting about the spontaneity of booking a break late on.
Whether you are looking to absorb a different culture and its history, or you want to soak up the sun, here are ten of our favourite locations for a last minute summer break.
Picture this – you have arrived in the capital of France and the streets are buzzing with culture, you can smell delicious French cuisine and you can see the beautiful Eiffel Tower ahead.
Paris is a popular choice for a last minute city break, with a great list of attractions to see, including the Arc de Triomphe and the village of Montmartre. The latter is bustling with historic charm and is home to the Moulin Rouge if you fancy catching dinner and a world-famous cabaret show. Also worth visiting is the Parc Floral, a stunning floral garden just east of Paris. As a lesser known attraction, it’s ideal if you want to take a break from the cosmopolitan city centre.
As the second largest city in Cyprus, Limassol is located on the south coast and boasts a great amount of historical attractions, including a Medieval Castle, and a Folk Art Museum.
Limassol is also blessed with plenty of greenery and a great way to explore it is by teeing off at one of the two golf courses near the city. If water sports are more your cup of tea, then Limassol has plenty to offer – we definitely recommend a sailing lesson on such beautiful waters.
Maspalomas, Gran Canaria
Is relaxing on the beach your ultimate summer break? Maspalomas has a stunning beach to take in the summer sun, and if you want to be pampered (and who doesn’t?), then one of the several spas are not to be missed for a body massage or facial treatment. However if you want to remain active on your break, then Maspalomas also offers horse riding, which is perfect for taking in the beautiful scenery.
When visiting Maspalomas do not miss the shopping arcades, boutique stores and the many bars and restaurants for excellent food and evening entertainment.
Prague, Czech Republic
There are many sights to be seen in the capital of the Czech Republic, including the world famous Astronomical Clock at the Old Town Hall. When the clock chimes on the hour, the crowds draw in to see its mechanics at work – you will see figures of Apostles and Death marking the change in time, and if you look closely you will see the calendar dials marking the months. It was first installed in 1410 and is the oldest working astronomical clock in the world.
Once you have seen the clock in action, it is well worth taking in the sights with a walking tour – most of which embark from the Old Town square. Prague is filled with fascinating monuments, such as the not to be missed Castle and Charles Bridge, with a variety of styles of architecture to see.
Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt
Egypt may not have been at the top of your list for places to visit, but Sharm El Sheikh has a lot to offer. The strip has plenty of restaurants, shops and bars to keep you entertained, but we also highly recommend a trip to the seafront to either go snorkelling at Shark’s Bay. If you prefer leaving behind the wetsuit, you could instead jump aboard a glass-sided Seascope submarine that will take you 3 meters under the Red Sea surface to observe panoramic views of the marine life.
If you want to sample the experience of the Old Market in Sharm, you could perfect your haggling skills and get some real bargains on souvenirs. The shopkeepers are very friendly, and enjoy talking to tourists.
These locations are just a selection of the many places that make a great last minute summer break. No matter where you decide to visit for your last minute break, have a wonderful time!
